After strong Jul taxpaid shipments, +884K bbls, 6%, and with easy comp vs Aug ’17 when taxpaids -5.4%, looked like domestic brewers might build some summer momentum. Didn’t happen. Indeed, Aug domestic brewers’ taxpaid shipments up anemic 21K bbls, 0.1%, estimates Beer Inst economist Michael Uhrich. Summer shipments (Jun-Aug) up just 203,000 bbls, 0.4%. And lion’s share of that gain likely hard seltzer, not beer. For 8 mos, taxpaids still off 2.3 mil bbls, 2%. Toss in import gain thru Jul and US biz off 1.2 mil bbls, 0.9% in latest yr-to-date view. Sep is easy comp too (-5% last yr), so still oppy to gain ground.
